This is an exceptionally fine Chinese Jun-ware style"Bubble Bowl," a sophisticated 20th-century revival of the iconicSong Dynasty stoneware. It features the classic deep, rounded form with aslightly inverted rim, historically used as a Brush Washer in a scholar'sstudio.
The bowl is dressed in a thick, unctuous opalescent glaze that transitions to a delicate "mushroom" tone atthe rim. The interior is dramatically highlighted by a vibrant, variegatedpurple copper splash. The splash displays a beautiful "frosted"effect, swirling into shades of turquoise and crimson—a testament to thepotter's mastery of kiln transmutation.
The glaze stops neatly above the foot, revealing a dark,chocolate-brown stoneware body that has been expertly trimmed.
This bowl carries a significant collector's labelon the base:
"The G.S. May Esquire Private Collection, London. No.628"
Brought Tokyo 1997
The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks,or restorations.
The glaze remains lustrous and smooth, showing a very fine, crackle characteristic of high-quality Jun-style wares.
